ISB Global operations platform

Background

ISB Global runs the operations of companies in waste management, recycling, clean energy and environmental services. Sectors that move trucks, handle materials, dispatch crews, bill commercial customers and report to regulators. The legacy systems were a patchwork. The clients were ready to consolidate. ISB needed to build the consolidated platform.

I joined as the first design hire. Twenty one months as Principal Product Designer. Set the bar, set the team, set the system. Shipped product across seven distinct modules covering the core of the operational stack.

Contribution

Research & workshops

Ran remote and in person discovery workshops with ops teams, dispatchers, drivers and field crews across multiple geographies.

0 to 1 platform design

Greenfield UX and UI for work order management, resource allocation, dispatch and reporting. The operational control plane.

Design system & team

Established the first design system, component library and usage guidelines. Built out an emerging design team.

Native mobile

Shaped native iOS and Android app principles for field use. Offline first patterns, glanceable data, single hand interactions.

"Design for the driver at 6am in the rain, then make sure ops can still run their reports." That was the bar for every module. Team principle

Takeaway

Twenty one months. Seven modules shipped. A pattern library that survived three handovers and the design team that took over after I left. Customers consolidated their stack onto the platform. Field crews used the mobile apps in rain and on shift.

The thing I'm proudest of isn't the modules. It's that two of the designers I hired and mentored are now leading product design at other companies. That's the actual measure of a principal role.
